p-y method of pile design

  • 1 Pile On Pile

Velvets constructed with pattern produced by different lengths of pile and obtained either by the method of weaving or by shearing. For warp pile fabrics the wires used have varying thicknesses along their length, thus thick places give long, and thin places short pile. For weft pile fabrics the floats are of different lengths, short floats give short length pile and long floats the longer pile. To produce pattern by finishing, part of the pile is pressed down by embossed rollers or blocks and the pile remaining erect is then sheared short. The pressed parts are brushed up and form the design.

  • 4 Hautelisse Loom (Vertical Loom)

A special loom built for the making of Turkey and Smyrna carpets and rugs. The warp is arranged vertically. The shafts are horizontal and fastened to two rollers which are turned alternately to the right or left, to move the shafts and open the shed. The pile is made by tying short lengths around two warp threads in the required colours for the design. The ground fabric is made by inserting two picks of strong yarn between each horizontal row of tufts. A comb is used to beat up. This method of tying the pile in tufts is costly.

  • 5 Chenille

An open edging for ladies' dress, of silk thread corded. It obtains its name from its resemblance to the convolutions of a hairy caterpillar, the Chenille of France. ———————— This is a term primarily applied to a fancy yarn which is made by weaving. The usual method of production is to arrange two pairs of leno threads in one dent of the reed, with a suitable space between, according to the thickness of the chenille yam required. The yarn can be white, mono-coloured or multi-coloured. In the latter case multiple boxes are required on the loom and are changed in accordance with the design desired. After weaving, the fabric is cut lengthways in the middle of the space between each group of four leno threads. This makes continuous chains of short tufts of weft pile and constitutes the chenille yarn. It is mostly used as weft for the production of table covers, hangings, dressing gowns, rugs, carpets, and as fancy yam effects in dress and other fabrics.
